Lyons Announces Year 2000 Hotline

December 21, 1999

Western Springs…State Representative Eileen Lyons (R-Western Springs) announced a new toll-free hotline and Internet sources for those with Y2K worries and to assist consumers with questions about Year 2000 scams. The hotline, 1-888-872-4925 was created by the Federal Trade Commission and can provide consumers with publications such as "Y2K and you," and a "Y2K Preparedness Checklist."  "To many people, Y2K is something to be very worried about," said Lyons. "The hotline will provide information to those who feel they need it."

Another helpful source for those with Y2K concerns is the State of Illinois Web page at www.state.il.us. There is a Y2K icon on the page and it leads to information about the state’s preparations for Y2K. The site also provides links to other pages dedicated to Y2K preparedness.

The most important information the Internet sites and the hotline have is about protecting consumers from Y2K fraud, said Lyons. The hotline advises consumers not to give out bank account or credit card numbers over the phone or online to people saying they need them for Y2K-related purposes. Consumers are also being advised to watch for unauthorized charges on their credit cards or debits from their checking accounts that may be related to Y2K fraud.

"Consumers need to be aware of the dangers that exist online, and in other circles," said Lyons. "Consumer fraud related to Y2K is especially scary and these resources should be used to their full potential."

Information on Y2K is available by calling the toll-free number, 1-888-872-4925, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. The Internet site can be accessed at any time.
