Western Springs . . . State Representative Eileen Lyons (R-Western Springs) announced a new program to help Illinois families pay their energy bills. Along with Nicor Gas, the Illinois Department of Commerce and Community Affairs designed the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).

"This program will help families whose energy bills have become too much for them," said Lyons.

The LIHEAP program will give funds to assist eligible low-income households pay for energy services. Income, household size, fuel type and geographic location will determine the amount allocated.

Those who wish to apply for LIHEAP benefits can call the Energy Information Line toll-free at 1-800-252-8643. Those in need can also call their local LIHEAP Intake Center. In DuPage, the center is located at the DuPage County Department of Human Services, and can be reached at (630) 682-7000. Residents of Will County can call the Will County Center for Community Concern at (815) 722-0722.

The agencies will determine if a household is eligible, based on the information

provided. The household will be notified in 30 days and told if they are eligible, and how much they will receive. The agency will then notify the energy provider and make the appropriate payment on the consumer’s behalf.

"The program is such an easy way for consumers to save, that I encourage everyone to call and see if they qualify," said Lyons. "As the cold weather approaches, it is even more important to know that your energy bills will be taken care of."

The Energy Information Line is open between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
