Representative Lyons to Collect Used Wireless Phones to Aid Victims of Domestic Violence

April 19, 2000

La Grange- State Representative Eileen Lyons and the Illinois Conference of Women Legislators are joining forces in a nationwide campaign to collect one million used wireless phones to benefit victims of domestic violence.

One of the 60 members of the Illinois Conference of Women Legislators participating in the “Donate a Phone” campaign, Representative Lyons will collect no longer used wireless phones at her district office at 1030 S La Grange Rd, La Grange.  Phones may be dropped off during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, 9AM to 4PM.

The used wireless phones will be preprogrammed with emergency numbers and will be distributed to domestic violence victims so that they can access help at the touch of a button.

“Every 15 seconds a crime of battery is committed and everyday 5,000 women become victims of domestic violence.  A wireless phone can be one of the most powerful weapons in the fight against this brutality.  It provides security to victims of domestic abuse and can help save lives,” said Representative Lyons.

Any and all wireless phones are accepted.  All makes, models and ages are welcome, as are wireless phone batteries and chargers.  Newer phones in good condition will be recycled and distributed to victims.  Very old phones or those in need of serious repair will be sold with proceeds used to support domestic violence programs.

The Conference of Women Legislators, comprised of women and men legislators serving in the General Assembly, works to advance the interests of Illinois women, and in particular, to help women and their families attain economic independence.  The addresses of other legislators participating in the “Donate a Phone” program may be found on WGN Radio’s website at www.wgnradio.com.
